Sojourners
2021 Sojourner Dates- August 23rd – September 9th
2020 Sojourn
What a blessing to have the Sojourners come and work here at Camp! This year the focus to start with was to build and salvage the dining hall tables due to the roof collapse last winter. Of course there was a list of many other things that were completed, including building staining, maintenance, upgrades to existing buildings, and stacking firewood. There were some chilly days where the work had to be focused indoors, but what a group of hard workers!! This group made the trip to Northern MN despite COVID. Of course, precautions were taken. We look forward to having them again next year.

2016 Info
Earlier this afternoon as I was scanning through the FPYC site looking at photos and checking out the summer schedule … I was reminded of some pretty neat things. In Dennie’s Song phrases like “the laughter of friends”, “a glimpse of God’s eternal glory”, “the smile of the Father as He beckons us home, to live with Him on high for eternity” … word pictures capturing what it’s like to be a part of Flaming Pine and what it is all about. Ellen and I have been a part of Christian camps for 60 years (Ellen longer than I). This year Ellen and I received our 10 year “t” shirts from FPYC. As Sojourners we have been coming to the camp by Mirror Lake since 2009. In our work with Sojourners we have worked with 9 different Christian camps around the country … Flaming Pine is the best. Someone a few years ago asked why we do it ... it all has to do with the young people and the dedicated staff that it takes to make a Christian camp work like yours does. The young people who attend Flaming Pine are the future of the church in Minnesota. The influence of what happens at Flaming Pine reaches around the state and the world to touch the hearts and minds of many people in various ways who are searching for something better in their lives. God works through you to accomplish much. It’s not about you or I, it is about our creator and what His plan is for our lives. Sojourners get to be a small part of that each year that we work with you at FPYC and at other locations around the country. We do it because we believe in the great work that you are doing here at Flaming Pine. Often it is said by Sojourners that we get much more out of it than what we put into our tasks, it’s true. We enjoy knowing you and working beside you who make this all possible as Christ works through you. We enjoy seeing the success that you are enjoying in His kingdom as you encourage young people and adults alike. Continued blessing to all of you in your work.

The LakeView building was the focus of the sojourner team this year. This building was built by the Boy’s Scouts in the late 40’s. As an FPYC building, it has had various names and uses throughout the years. It has been used as the caretaker’s
house, boy’s cabin, craft building, canteen, store room, dock house, rainy day activity area, and classrooms. Now it has 5 sleeping rooms, 3 classrooms, waterfront room, and storage. The interior looks very different. With the lake view and breeze the sleeping rooms might just be the best on camp! Some started cleaning up camp. The dead trees that were removed will keep the wood stove going this winter! The fall work list was greatly reduced-ovens cleaned, shelving and storage scrubbed, rooms organized and the dining tables cleaned from up to down!
The team leader was John Lucas. John and Ellen come from their home state of Iowa to attend Second Family camp-this was their 6th year. The other couples traveled quite a distance from their home states to volunteer here-Texas, Kentucky and Oklahoma. They did enjoy our cooler weather; it stayed in the 70’s and 80’s while they worked here. Gary and Joanne Nading, Mike and Diane McEndree, LeRoy Murphy and Dave Engebretson were also here helping.
Some of the couples went sightseeing during the weekends-International Falls to cross into Canada, Duluth, Grand Rapids, and the bear center in Orr. Gary and Joanne Nading also arranged a tour of the open pit mine in Babbitt.
We are very appreciative of the work that they did here at camp- and would like to thank each of them for contributing to making Flaming Pine Youth Camp a great place to be!
